In collaboration with the Institut pour l’Education dans la Famille (www.ipef.fr), the Caribbean Institute for Family Development held its very first workshop for couples in Martinique in April this year (2012). Renaud and Sylvie de Beauminy from Toulouse moderated the sessions. The couple have six children themselves and enriched the sessions sharing experiences they have had raising their own children. Renaud spoke of the challenges of raising children in an environment that is increasingly secular and materialistic in outlook. In his second presentation, Renaud addressed the challenge parents face of being available to their family, juggling the demands of work, community, health and other obligations. A spirit of adventure and sacrifice is needed knowing that family is always first and the the best investment parents make is the attention they give to family life. He suggested that couples should schedule time alone to build their own relationship even though it may not be easy to do so. He recommended that parents observe their children carefully so that their approach to raising each child is tailored to their specific character strengths and defects.
